Five Techniques to Convert New Patients into Customers and Improve Your Care Experience

This is a topic that I have discussed with a number of people over the past few years, and it is something that I am often asked about by my colleagues. It has to do with the improvements in patient experience that have been made during the last couple of decades. Its origins can be traced back to an article entitled “Patient-Centered Care” (Murray & Hsiao, 1998), which promoted a philosophy of care that translates into an approach to providing medical care for patients. The article was written by two authors from the World Health Organization, and it has been cited more than 1300 times since its publication in 2000.The main message of the article, which was published in the British Medical Journal, is that “the doctor’s role is to respect and enhance the patient’s autonomy and to serve as advocate for his or her needs”. In other words, doctors should be a patient advocate. According to Murray & Hsiao (1998), the ideal model of medical care is the one that emphasizes prevention, self-care and collaboration between patients and healthcare professionals. The article also promotes a new form of patient-centered care. It advises doctors to “tailor care to the needs of the individual patient and to promote self-care”, and it recommends that patients are to be ‘informed, involved and empathetic’. The aim of medical practitioners, according to the article, is to “respect the patient’s right and responsibility in achieving health”.
