Introduction to Converse – How this Iconic Brand Grew From a Basketball Shoe Company into the Next Fashion Trend

By the 1930s, Converse became a huge brand in the United States. In 1932, Americans bought a million pairs. They had expanded their production facilities to meet the growing demands and were employing thousands of people. At this time, they also came out with two very influential advertising campaigns with the slogan, “anything with a star and a stripe will do.” One of them, “Converse is the shoe that John Wayne likes” was extremely successful and widely used in posters, billboards, and radio commercials. However, this slogan only came out in 1946.
Beginning in 1931 when the company moved to New Bedford, Massachusetts they began using the slogan ‘The Swoosh’ which has become one of the most recognized brand names worldwide.
For the year 2003, Converse was ranked #35 on the Fortune 500 list. They are also one of the most widely recognized brands worldwide.
In 1920, Converse sponsored the development of a basketball shoe that it introduced in 1922. It became widely popular and was worn by almost every basketball player of note through the 1940s and 1950s until it faded into obscurity as basketball shoes changed from low-top canvas to high tennis shoes and eventually to a more flexible sole.
Although the company was not known when it first started in the late 19th century, it became known and well-recognized after a key ad campaign in the 1940s. One of their most famous slogans is “The world’s best basketball shoe.”

The Greats of Converse Shoes

In 1933, the company was named Rubber Shoe Company of America. In 1934, the company went public and traded their stock on the New York Stock Exchange. In 1937, the company was renamed Converse Rubber Shoe Company. During World War II, rubber was rationed for the war effort, so Converse made shoes using canvas and other similar materials (this is also when Chuck Taylor joined the company). Business boomed by 1949. From here, instead of growing out of sneakers, they were growing into them. The last year that Converse did not make athletic shoes was 1953, when they reduced their shoe production to focus more on dress shoes.[i]
Converse had the first basketball shoe contract with the Boston Celtics. They later teamed up with ENCORE in 1954, and still have a partnership today.[ii]
Chuck Taylor joined Converse in 1917 as a manager, but he soon moved into the design department. He developed the All Star in 1917, which became the most dominant basketball shoe of the 1940s and 50s. Chuck Taylor desired a high-top sneaker, which would help stop ball handling while providing ankle support. Goodyear Rubber Company designed a high-top sneaker for him, but it failed.[iii]
