“How to Be a Bond Girl: The Complete Guide of Becoming an Acting Icon in the James Bond Films”

Introduction: How did you become a Bond girl?

I was 20 when I was offered the part, and it seemed like too much of a good thing to turn down. I had done a couple of stage productions, but I’d never been in front of the camera before. Initially, it was quite a lot to take in. It’s overwhelming to meet all these people who are much more famous than you are. I applied for the part because I wanted to be in a James Bond movie, but it was daunting. When I was initially offered the part, it didn’t happen straightaway. Then suddenly, a call came through from the casting director telling me the news. I jumped out of my chair. It was great being able to have such excited people around me when I received that phone call – that really did make my day!
The character of Kissy Suzuki is quite different from your previous roles as an actress.
I had never done anything like it before. The character’s name, Kissy Suzuki, has in the past been a stereotype for oriental women characters. I thought it would be great to get to play a cool Bond girl who has some sort of role in the story. She has hidden depths. I was really pleased with the role when I read the script.
There is already a lot of expectation surrounding the movie. How did you manage to cope with that?

How Actresses Become More Popular and Relevant as Filming Progresses

My role in the James Bond film was a mini part, and I ended up on the cutting room floor. When I was watching the final version of The Man With The Golden Gun I had actually left my house to go out on a date. So when I got to the cinema, there was a whole sequence that didn’t feature me, and when they cut to Thailand they were filming with someone else. I was not thrilled with this, and although I didn’t want to say anything at the time, later on I thought, “I wish I could have said something.”
In my role as Jinx in Bond 22 , I played a former secret agent turned amateur hacking expert. This was originally just a cameo role but as the film progressed they noticed that my character’s knowledge of hacking seemed to be particularly valuable. The director went up to me on set one day and asked me whether I knew any women who hacked a lot. When I told him I didn’t know of any, he said, “Well, maybe you’d know someone. Just keep your eyes open.”
When I got the script for Quantum Of Solace , again I was only a small part, just one extra. As Bond travels to Argentina to join forces with the CIA in their efforts to take down an international criminal organization, my part was as a member of their local military unit. I was one of the ones that rescued Bond from the angry local villagers after he’d been thrown into the river by Dominic Greene’s goons.

How Do Actors & Directors Choose Their Leading Ladies?

People are taken on because they fit the role. It’s much easier to work with someone you feel comfortable with, so I think that’s where chemistry comes in. For Bond, it was always about who could act and be sexy in a classy way. And it was always about who could be tough, but in a sexy and classy way.

Actress Reputation and How it is Calculated

When you are starting out, obviously that’s a good thing, because it takes people off the table. But I think as you progress as an actress and people start to see … there’s different levels of respect, I suppose. But I don’t know. It’s a weird one. I don’t think it makes any difference to the work that you do, and I’m sure that if anything it makes people want to work with me more, because they see me as a real actress. I can’t say I’ve had offers based on that. [Laughs.] But, I mean, it’s not been a detriment to me in my career. It’s actually been a positive thing in some ways.

What are some of the biggest actresses who were not chosen for the Bond films?

There are a lot of big-name actresses that I would love to have been in there, but for me personally, being on the cutting room floor was actually a good thing. Because it was my first role and I didn’t have any expectations. I didn’t have any pre-conceptions, I just did my own thing and for some reason it worked. And it worked at the time and it worked financially and I was nominated for an Oscar.
Natalie Wood Natalie Wood (1938-1981)was nominated for Best Supporting Actress in 1971, 1973 and 1974. She starred in “West Side Story” (1961) where she played Maria Elena Santander alongside Richard Beymer . The movie was a smash hit but Wood died shortly after completing her scenes for her final film, “Love with the Proper Stranger”, in which she had to go on camera before she drowned in 1981.
Joan Collins Joan Collins( born 1933) was nominated for Best Supporting Actress in 1965 and 1966. She was considered to play Pussy Galore in the James Bond film “Goldfinger”, but was dismissed on account of her being deemed too old.
