The Amazing History of Men’s Plaid Suits

Introduction: What are the Origins of Men’s Plaid Suits?

The plaid suit has been the subject of a major fashion controversy in 2011, when Parisian fashion designer, Hedi Slimane, reintroduced the plaid suit for the spring-summer 2012. Slimane had formerly worked for Dior. His controversial approach is to use the fabric, a slightly dirty shade of green and brown, which is “tinted” with the same color. Slimane’s plaids are masculine and powerful in their tendency towards minimalism.
Plaids have long been associated with country life; for example, the Scottish tartan pants are based on this. Over the course of time, although the traditional tartans have become universally accepted by designers, many others have been created from other patterns or even combinations of patterns.
Other designers such as Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana of Dolce & Gabbana have designed plaid suits.
One source of the modern-day fad for the plaid suit may be the post-punk movement (often labeled New Wave) from the late 1960s. This was a time in Western culture characterized by a more liberal political outlook and by an experimental approach to cultural activities, including fashion and design. The style of the plaids in this period were more monochromatic, with very dark colors and a large amount of black. In addition, groups such as The Clash (the influential British punk band from the East London area of London) wore Argyle print suits, which were considered 1980s retro fashion in 2006.

What is the History of Men’s Plaid Suits?

When Simpson’s suits were worn with a shirt and tie, it developed into the first classic look for men’s business attire. Simpson’s foncé suit was later called the “black tie” suit. The foirce color scheme is a classic look that is still in fashion today.
In the 19th century, the Scottish kilt was worn as a symbol of masculine identity. Kilt wearers were not allowed to wear anything under the kilt. The idea of men wearing underwear beneath their kilts became so repugnant that writers invented a story about it being banned by an Act of Parliament when, in fact, there was no such law and men wore drawers or not as they wished.

The History of Men’s Plaid Suits in Fashion

The McArthur plaid suit is a classic pattern that has been around for decades. It was named after the designer, Archibald McArthur, who created it for the Duke of Windsor in 1929. The Duke wore the suit throughout his life. The most famous versions of this plaid are blue and black with white or light gray outlines on a dark background. The Duke of Windsor wore various McArthur Plaid suits throughout his life. They included the plaid suit he wore in 1929 for his first meeting with Adolf Hitler and 1938 for his very last appearance as “King Edward VIII” of the British Empire before abdication.
This style has been seen in pop culture on TV, in movies, and in books. Robert De Niro wore the McArthur plaid in the movie, Casino. A classic example of this style is Paul Newman’s red and black poplin suit in the movie, The Sting (1973).

Don’t forget to add accessories like hats and scarves that match the plaid in order to have the whole outfit look prefect and coordinated. At the end of this article I’ll link you to a few different ways to wear plaid jackets.
For the guy who wants to dress casual this holiday season but still want to look prefect and coordinated.
I looked in a few different stores and couldn’t find a blazer that was both casual enough for everyday but also prefect and coordinated with the plaid. I found this one in Macy’s and it was perfect because it’s a little more casual than most blazers, but still has a nice shape.
Also Macy’s had a really nice brown belt that matched the plaid. I have a belt from target that has actually been my favorite belt for a while now, so I wore it to match the color and also it goes great with the plaid.
