Introduction: 5 Classic Stories You Should Read to Your Kids

The Cat in the Hat: A classic that is loved by all ages. Follow the antics of a striped cat as he enters a household and entertains two bored kids with games, including making a mess out of things in order to clean them up again. The kids’ mother returns home and is very angry at the mess, but the family has a great time together in the end. The kids and the cat all sing “The A-Tisket, A-Tasket” song.
Green Eggs and Ham: This is another classic children’s book with a silly premise that works on so many levels. Green eggs and ham sound like they would be awful to eat, but once you try them, they are delicious! Yes, they are good! Try something new, as Dr. Seuss always says.

1. The Story of the Cat in the Hat – Dr. Suess

The Cat in the Hat is a popular children’s book written by Dr. Seuss and published on March 12th, 1957. It was later published as a Little Golden Book in 1958. The tale follows the antics of a mischievous cat that introduces the main characters, Sally and her brother, to the joys of reading. Like most of Dr. Seuss’s books, the Cat in the Hat is a great read for children of all ages. There are 42 different characters in this book and the plot involves two kids trying to stop a cat from stealing their parents’ Christmas presents. Although the title of the book is The Cat in the Hat, it was written by an unnamed narrator.
The Cat in the Hat is written in rhyming couplets (so called Spewbs or even Four-and-twenty or conversely) and with a slight twist to the traditional rhyme scheme: “Baby” > “cat”; “cat” > “hat”. This may be because it was originally first published as a novel, then reissued as a Little Golden Book. As with Dr. Seuss’s other stories, some of the rhymes are half rhymes, in that they rhyme only partially but not on the last syllable.

The story begins on a dark and stormy night. The sky is filled with black clouds and the wind blows fiercely. His little grandson doesn’t understand what that has to do with anything; he simply doesn’t want to listen. Grandpa gives him another chance and asks him again and again, but his grandson refuses to answer.
